On June 27, 1848, the Grand Lodge of Delaware, which governed all Masonic lodges in the state, approved a petition from a small group of prominent Milton men to establish Endeavor Lodge 17. The charter for the new lodge was transferred from Frederica, where the Masonic order had ceased operating for several years, making Endeavor Lodge 17—now 175 years old—the oldest fraternal organization in Milton.
